The New York College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (NYCTCM) Alumni Association was established in September 2005 with the mission of providing a supportive, professional network for both recent graduates of the school and alumni members. The alumni association is a community where recent graduates of the school may connect with and seek guidance from New York College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (NYCTCM) alumni on matters relating to finding a job and starting a practice.
The alumni association is a resource where practicing professionals can consult with another regarding practice issues such as discussion of difficult patient cases or business management. The board members have outlined a set of short-term and long-term goals to help create an association that would best meet the needs of the alumni, and they are as follows:
- NYCTCM Alumni Contact Directory - This directory will contain alumni addresses, phone numbers and email addresses. This will be a convenient means of keeping in contact with fellow classmates and a source of referral of patients between alumni.
- NYCTCM Continuing Education - Alumni Association will offer various continuing education seminars and classes which will be available to the public and at a discount for alumni.
- Online-posting of Professional Opportunities - A classifieds section including employment opportunities, office space rentals and sales, and vendor information to be posted on the website.
Certification for Completing Acupuncture Practice in Integrated Health Care System
As many of you know, one of NYCTCM’s educational goals is to provide our graduates a fundamental understanding of the Western Medical approach, and an ability to integrate their practice of TCM within the Western Healthcare system. In order to achieve this goal, the school has entered a partnership with Gouverneur Hospital in Manhattan in both the Skilled Nursing Facility and the Rehabilitative Medicine Services. We now proudly announce that all the preparation work between the school and the hospital has been finished and registration for hospital internship has officially begun.
This is a great opportunity to practice acupuncture within the Western Healthcare system. The following are some of the advantages that a qualified intern or alumni can gain in participating in such a program:
Gain experience and training in treating a broader spectrum of disorders including hemiplegia due to stroke that interns normally would not encounter in an outpatient clinic.
Gain experience and training in treating a larger volume of patients.
Gain experience and training in standardized protocols and procedures of a formal Western hospital.
According to the Summit on Integrative Medicine and the Health of the Public held by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, Integrative Medicine is an inevitable national healthcare trend that improves the breadth and depth of patient-centered care and promotes the nation's health. Your practice experience in Gouverneur Hospital will allow you to build a stronger resume and gain better employment opportunities in such an integrated health care environment
In the forefront of the AOM profession, ACAOM is developing a reconceptualized Master’s standards that emphasize competency-based education and training. Participating in the hospital internship provides additional practical and clinical training that may be necessary to the attainment of the required professional competencies.
To encourage and honor the students and graduates who complete at least 2 shifts (120 hours) of acupuncture practice at Gouverneur Hospital, the school will issue a Certificate of Completion of Acupuncture Practice in an Integrated Healthcare System. Any interested NYCTCM graduates may contact the school for more details or for a Clinic Registration form.
