NYCTCM has been approved by the New York State Education Department and was granted an absolute charter on November 9, 2001. On April 29, 2003, the Board of Regents authorized NYCTCM to confer the Bachelor of Professional Studies and Master of Science degrees. The professional Masters program in acupuncture and Masters program in Oriental Medicine of the New York College of Traditional Chinese Medicine are accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM), which is the recognized accrediting agency for the approval of programs preparing acupuncture and Oriental medicine practitioners.

NYCTCM has been approved by the U.S. Department of Education and the New York State Education Department to administer financial aid programs, and has been authorized by the Department of Homeland Security to grant admission to full-time students from foreign countries. 

These programs include: NYS Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), Department of Veterans Affairs-Educational Benefits and Educational Assistant (G.I. Bill), Office of Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities (VESID), and Federal Student Aid.
